“La, la, la, la!” sings two-year-old Swetha as parents, children and program leaders sing together in a circle. An even younger child makes the simple hand motions that go along with the song.
What is happening? Parents and children are learning fun ways to communicate and grow closer together through a program called the Peterborough Parent-Child Mother Goose program. It has been offered since 2007 in partnership with the New Canadians Centre and the Peterborough Public Library.
The program is 10 weeks long and is open to caregivers (mothers, fathers, grandparents, and others) of children (newborns to the age of three – slightly older siblings are welcome to attend.)
The program has brought newcomer and other families together to share as a group the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs and storytelling. The goal of the program is to use simple bouncing rhymes, songs and stories to help parents and children grow closer together. It is a fun way to connect, communicate, cuddle and build a stronger community by using playful, language-based activities.
While other programs use rhymes, songs and stories in programs for parents and their young children, the Peterborough Parent-Child Mother Goose program is different because they know that the rhymes, songs and stories are not only fun but are also a way to strengthen people’s lives and relationships. The program leaders teach the songs and stories to parents and the children join in.
The program is welcoming with a relaxed pace and time to enjoy the healthy snacks provided by the program leaders. The program also offers opportunities for sharing the joys and challenges of parenting young children and for sharing cultural experiences and insights.
Here are some quotes from our past participants:
More than anything, the program has helped us to connect with families and to learn and celebrate different cultures and experiences. This has been really enriching and is truly unique compared to other children's programs. I will miss the weekly burst of positive energy and the sharing among parents. This is a remarkable program.
The program let me know more ways, more songs to sing to my baby, help him sing, speak, react to my songs and motion. I will miss the caring environment, the happy and active kids with different colours.
We love the happy tickle and hug time, the singing and the sharing.
I will miss all that we do together, especially how you meet people with some values and compassion for children. When I come here, I have no stress.
A lovely, relaxing way for us to spend a morning together. It is a part of the week we all look forward to.
